Self-Doubt and Imposter Syndrome: High Achievers Have the Hardest Time

Self-Doubt and Imposter Syndrome

Have you ever made a sale, got a promotion, or even orated on stage and then you hear the little voice say to you, You really do not deserve this. One day, they will discover that “you are not as good as they think you are”

If so, you’re not alone. Indeed, the closer you get to the top of your career, or your business, the more that voice tends to increase in volume.

I have worked with executives, founders, and brilliant professionals who have created incredible success, but deep within, they feel to be a fraud. It is not because they are not qualified, it is something deeper, it is the conditioning of the mind.

The Hidden Belief Driving Self-Doubt

Imposter syndrome has nothing to do with your skills or abilities. You may have degrees, years of experience, proven track record, and yet you feel that you are not good enough. Why?

That’s because somewhere along the way you’ve learnt that:

  • “I’m not enough.”
  • “Success is not mine, it belongs to someone else.”
  • “People would never look up to me, they would never know or like the real me.”

Such a belief is instilled during childhood, school, or other early career life. And no amount of external success will keep it quiet till you rewire it internally.

The Reason Why High Performers Are The Most Challenged

Ironically, the individuals that experience imposter syndrome most are the most competent. You have more expectations, more responsibilities and you always challenge yourself. But your mind continues to compare you with an unattainable ideology of “perfection”, and you never measure up.

This is why executives and business owners tend to lead a life where they are silently conflicted: outwardly respected and inwardly wrestling with doubt.

The Truth Your Mind Needs to Hear

This is the fact: You cannot play a fake role at being real.

It did not happen by accident that you are successful. It’s not luck. It’s not a fluke. It is the outcome of your choices, your talents, your persistence, and your courage.

Everything changes when you stop telling yourself that you do not deserve this and begin to tell yourself that you worked hard to get here, I deserve this, I belong here, etc.

Rewiring Self-Doubt

The good thing is that self-doubt is not forever. It is just a habit. And what you learn, can you unlearn.

  1. Catch the voice. The next time you hear, “I am not enough”, take a pause. Notice it.
  2. Challenge it. Ask yourself: “Where is the proof that I do not belong? Where’s the evidence that I do?”
  3. conviction: “I am more than enough. I am the right person in the right place doing the right job at the right time.”

What you say the mind believes, so tell it better things!

Your Next Level of Freedom

Once you disregard imposter syndrome, you no longer wait for permission. You cease to over-prove yourself. You start to lead, talk and make decisions easily.

And that is when business picks up, careers grow, and life becomes lighter.

Because the truth is, you’ve earned your place. The only thing left to do is to believe it.
